SEO Cost in India 2026: What You Should Pay

SEO cost in India depends on scope, competition and who does the work, but most providers price it as a monthly retainer. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO service providers, 76% of India-based SEOs said they charge US$1,000 or less a month for a retainer (Ahrefs SEO pricing survey). For a rupee reference point, Zuptek publishes its own plans: local SEO at Rs 6,999, Rs 12,999 and Rs 22,999 a month, and business SEO at Rs 9,999, Rs 19,999 and Rs 34,999 a month.

That range is wide because “SEO” covers very different amounts of work. A Faridabad clinic that needs to appear in the map pack for ten searches needs a few hours of skilled work a week. A store with 2,000 products competing against marketplace listings needs a team. This guide explains what moves the price, how agencies structure it, what you should receive at each level, and the warning signs of a quote that is too cheap to be real. If you want to compare against published plans, our SEO services page lists every price and what it includes.

Key takeaways

  • Survey data puts most Indian SEO retainers at or below US$1,000 a month; single-location local SEO sits at the lower end, ecommerce and competitive national terms at the upper end.
  • The fee buys hours of skilled work. Very low monthly fees leave too few hours to do content and links properly.
  • Monthly retainers are the normal model. Project fees suit one-time audits and migrations. Performance-based pricing is rare and usually a trap.
  • Judge a quote by its deliverables and the account access you get. Keyword counts on their own tell you little.
  • Walk away from guaranteed rankings, long lock-ins with no exit and reports that show only rankings.

SEO cost in India by business type

The rupee figure for any business depends on scope, so the table compares business types by relative cost and by what drives the price, rather than quoting invented averages.

Business typeRelative monthly costWhat drives the price
Single-location local business (clinic, salon, gym, coaching centre, CA firm)LowestGoogle Business Profile, reviews, citations, a short list of local keywords
Multi-location or multi-service local businessLow to moderateOne profile per branch, location pages, more content
B2B manufacturer or exporterModerateProduct and category pages, technical articles, long sales cycle
Small ecommerce storeModerate to highCategory strategy, product schema, crawl and duplicate fixes
National service brand in a competitive categoryHighContent volume, digital PR, strong competitors
Large ecommerce or enterprise siteHighestDedicated team, developer time, multiple markets

Freelancers usually charge less than agencies for a similar scope. You trade the discount for a single point of failure and less process.

How SEO agencies in India price their work

Monthly retainer. The standard model. You pay a fixed fee for a fixed scope: so many pages, articles and links per month, plus reporting. Retainers usually run for several months because results compound.

Project fee. A one-time price for a defined piece of work, such as a technical audit, a site migration or a content overhaul. Ahrefs found that 93.75% of India-based SEOs charge US$1,500 or less per project (Ahrefs). This suits businesses with an in-house team to carry the work forward.

Hourly or day rate. In the same survey, 85.7% of India-based SEOs charge US$30 an hour or less. Suited to consulting, training and second opinions.

Performance-based. You pay per ranking or per lead. It sounds safe. In practice the provider picks easy keywords, counts junk leads, or uses shortcuts that get your site penalised. Treat it with caution.

What changes the price

Seven things move an SEO quote up or down.

  1. Competition. Ranking a tutor in Sector 15 costs less than ranking a loan provider across India. The strongest competitor sets the bar.
  2. Starting point. A five-year-old site with clean structure and some links needs less than a brand new domain. A site carrying a penalty or thousands of thin pages needs clean-up first.
  3. Content volume. Writing is the largest cost in most campaigns. Two articles a month and eight articles a month are different prices.
  4. Link building. Real outreach, guest posts and digital PR take hours and sometimes placement fees. Automated links are cheap and harmful.
  5. Technical condition. A WordPress site with 40 plugins on shared hosting needs developer time before anything else works.
  6. Locations and languages. Each branch needs its own profile, page and citations. Hindi or regional language content adds writing cost.
  7. Who does the work. A senior strategist with a team executing costs more than a one-person shop. You pay for judgement.

What you should get at each level

The levels below use Zuptek’s published plans as the reference, because those inclusions are written down and you can check them on our SEO services page.

Entry level: local profile work

Room for Google Business Profile management, citations, review monitoring, basic on-page fixes and a monthly report. Zuptek’s Local SEO Starter at Rs 6,999 a month covers profile setup and optimisation, 8 local keywords, 20 local citations a month, review monitoring, a NAP consistency audit and a monthly local ranking report. That is enough for a single-location business with weak local competition. It is too little for content and link building at the same time. Anyone promising “complete SEO” at a fraction of this is either outsourcing to automated tools or doing very little.

Standard business SEO

The entry point for proper SEO on a business website. Zuptek’s Business SEO Starter at Rs 9,999 a month includes 10 target keywords, on-page optimisation for 10 pages, a technical SEO audit, 15 backlinks and 2 blog posts a month, and a monthly report. The Gold plan at Rs 19,999 a month raises that to 25 keywords and pages, schema markup, 40 backlinks and 4 blog posts a month, competitor analysis and fortnightly reports.

Competitive categories and ecommerce

For competitive categories, ecommerce, or businesses that want faster growth. Zuptek’s Business SEO Premium at Rs 34,999 a month includes 60 target keywords, unlimited on-page optimisation, Core Web Vitals work, 90 backlinks and 8 blog posts a month, conversion rate optimisation, a dedicated SEO manager and weekly reports.

Enterprise programmes

Multiple writers, a developer on call, digital PR, international targeting, and a strategist who sits in your marketing meetings. Fair for large ecommerce and national brands, and quoted individually. Unnecessary for most SMEs.

Red flags in an SEO quote

  • Guaranteed first-page rankings. Nobody controls Google. Guarantees mean easy keywords or no intention of honouring them.
  • Huge link numbers. “500 backlinks per month” means directory spam and private blog networks. Fifteen real links beat five hundred fake ones.
  • No account access. If Search Console, Analytics and your Google Business Profile are outside your own Google account, you do not own your data.
  • Ranking-only reports. Rankings are a means. Reports must show organic traffic, enquiries and the work completed.
  • Long lock-in with no exit. A clear notice period is reasonable. A contract you cannot leave is a warning.
  • No named person. You should know who writes your content and who you call when something breaks.
  • Price far below the market. A tiny fee for “complete SEO” usually buys a gig marketplace order and a dashboard.

SEO cost compared with Google Ads

Paid search gives you a per-click price that never falls on its own: every new enquiry costs roughly what the last one did. An SEO fee stays flat while rankings and enquiries build, so the cost per enquiry from organic search tends to fall the longer the work runs. The sensible approach for most businesses is both: Google Ads for leads this month, SEO for leads that get cheaper over time. For how long that takes, read how long SEO takes to show results.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in India?

It depends on scope. In Ahrefs’ survey, 76% of India-based SEOs charge US$1,000 or less a month for a retainer. Zuptek’s published plans run from Rs 6,999 a month for single-location local SEO to Rs 34,999 a month for competitive business SEO. Enterprise programmes are quoted individually.

What is the cost of SEO for a small business in India?

A small business with one website and one location needs a plan that includes technical fixes, on-page work, content and links; at Zuptek that is Business SEO Starter at Rs 9,999 or Gold at Rs 19,999 a month. If you only need Google Maps visibility, a local SEO plan from Rs 6,999 a month is enough to start. See our local SEO guide for India.

Why do SEO prices vary so much in India?

Because the word covers everything from a monthly profile update to a 20-person content operation. Price follows hours, seniority and competition. Two quotes for “SEO” can describe completely different amounts of work, so compare deliverables line by line.

Is Rs 5,000 per month SEO worth it?

Only for the narrowest local scope, such as profile management and a few citations. At that level there are too few hours for content and genuine link building, which are the parts that move rankings on a business website.

Do SEO agencies charge GST in India?

GST-registered agencies add GST to their fee, usually at 18% for marketing services. If your business is GST-registered you can normally claim it as input credit, so the net cost is the base fee. Check the treatment with your accountant.

Is a one-time SEO payment possible?

Yes, for audits, migrations and one-off fixes. Ongoing rankings need ongoing content and links, so one-time “SEO packages” rarely hold their results beyond a few months.
