Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian Businesses

Pick Shopify if you want a store that runs itself for a predictable monthly fee and you can accept a transaction fee of 0.6% to 2% on payments through third-party gateways, depending on your plan. Pick WooCommerce if you want the lowest running cost, full control over GST invoicing and pricing rules, and you have someone to maintain a WordPress site. Both handle Razorpay, UPI and cash on delivery well.

Zuptek builds on both platforms through our ecommerce development service, and we have no commercial reason to push either. The right answer depends on your catalogue, your margins, your share of COD orders and how much technical attention you can give the store. This guide puts the two side by side on the points that matter in India.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify: higher cash cost, lower effort, excellent uptime, a transaction fee on online payments because stores in India use third-party gateways.
  • WooCommerce: lower cash cost, more control, no surcharge, but updates, backups and security are your responsibility or your agency’s.
  • Both support Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, PhonePe, UPI and COD. Both can produce GST-compliant invoices with the right app or plugin.
  • Shopify fixes your URL structure; WooCommerce lets you control every SEO detail. Both rank fine when built well.
  • Choose Shopify for simple D2C catalogues and small teams. Choose WooCommerce for complex pricing, B2B, content-heavy stores and tight margins.

Cost in INR for a small store

Take a store doing Rs 3 lakh a month in online payments, as an illustration:

  • Shopify Basic: the plan is Rs 1,994 a month billed monthly (Rs 1,499 billed yearly), and the 2% transaction fee on Rs 3 lakh of gateway payments adds Rs 6,000 a month, on top of the gateway’s own fee. Add whatever apps you need for GST invoices, reviews and COD confirmation. There is no maintenance bill.
  • WooCommerce: no plan fee and no transaction fee. You pay for hosting sized for a store, any premium plugins, and maintenance, either your own time or a care plan.

The gap grows with online sales volume because Shopify’s transaction fee is a percentage. At Rs 10 lakh a month in gateway payments, 2% on Basic is Rs 20,000 a month. At that level it is worth comparing Grow (1%), Advanced (0.6%) and WooCommerce on total cost. More detail is in our ecommerce website cost guide.

Payment gateways and UPI

Shopify Payments does not operate in India, so every Shopify store uses a third-party gateway and pays Shopify’s transaction fee on top of the gateway’s fee. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, PhonePe Payment Gateway and PayPal for international orders are all available. Checkout opens in the gateway’s page or pop-up, which supports UPI intent on mobile, cards, net banking, wallets and EMI.

WooCommerce connects to the same gateways through plugins, most of them free, and pays no platform transaction fee. The checkout experience is similar once configured.

On UPI specifically, both platforms depend on the gateway’s rate card. UPI carries zero MDR, but Razorpay’s standard plan still lists its 2% platform fee on UPI (Razorpay), so confirm your gateway’s rate before modelling margins.

Cash on delivery

COD remains common in Indian ecommerce, especially outside metros and in fashion and consumer goods. Both platforms accept it. The important work is the same on both: OTP or WhatsApp confirmation before dispatch, a COD handling fee or a prepaid discount, a limit on COD for high-value orders, and blocking pin codes with high return rates.

On Shopify this needs a manual payment method plus an app, usually on a monthly subscription. On WooCommerce it is built in, with free or one-time-cost plugins for OTP verification. Shopify’s help centre says manual payment methods such as cash on delivery are not charged third-party transaction fees (Shopify Help), which makes Shopify relatively cheaper for stores where COD dominates; confirm it on your own bill.

GST invoicing

Indian stores must issue invoices with your GSTIN, HSN codes, the correct CGST and SGST or IGST split based on the customer’s state, and the customer’s GSTIN for B2B orders. Marketplace sellers are used to this being automatic.

Shopify’s default order confirmation is not a GST invoice. You need an app from the Shopify App Store that generates compliant invoices and handles the inter-state split. Most charge a monthly subscription; check the current price on the app listing.

WooCommerce has free and paid plugins that add GST fields, HSN codes per product, the state-based split and PDF invoices, and they can be customised to match your accountant’s format. B2B stores that need a GSTIN field at checkout, reverse charge notes or Tally export are simpler on WooCommerce.

Both are workable. WooCommerce is more flexible if your invoicing is unusual.

Speed and SEO

Shopify is fast out of the box and stays fast unless you overload it with apps. Its URL structure is fixed: /collections/, /products/, /pages/, /blogs/. You cannot remove those folders, and robots.txt editing is limited. Redirects are supported. For most D2C stores this is fine.

WooCommerce speed depends entirely on hosting and build quality. A well-built WooCommerce store on good hosting is as fast as Shopify. A badly built one on the cheapest shared hosting is slow and loses rankings. In return you control everything: URL structure, schema, canonical rules for filtered pages, robots, redirects, and the blog, which lives on the same site and can be as deep as you like. Content-heavy SEO strategies are easier on WooCommerce.

Maintenance and risk

Shopify handles updates, security, backups and traffic spikes. You will almost never call anyone because the store is down.

WooCommerce runs on WordPress, which needs core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security monitoring. Without them, stores are exposed to breakage and security problems. Budget for a care plan, or your own time, and treat that as part of the platform cost.

Who should pick Shopify

  • D2C brands with a simple catalogue and standard pricing.
  • Founders without a technical person on the team.
  • Stores expecting sudden traffic spikes from influencer or TV campaigns.
  • Businesses where most orders are COD, so the surcharge matters less.
  • Anyone who values never thinking about hosting.

Who should pick WooCommerce

  • Stores with tight margins and high online payment volume, where a 1% to 2% transaction fee is real money.
  • B2B sellers needing login pricing, minimum order quantities, quotes or Tally integration.
  • Brands whose growth strategy is content and SEO.
  • Businesses that already run a WordPress website and want the store on the same domain.
  • Anyone who wants to own the entire stack.

Moving between them

Migration in either direction is routine: products, customers and order history move with tools or scripts, and a redirect map keeps rankings. Ask for a fixed migration quote based on your product, customer and URL counts. The SEO side is covered in our redesign without losing rankings guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify or WooCommerce better in India?

Neither is better overall. Shopify is better for simplicity and uptime. WooCommerce is better for cost, control and complex requirements. Match the platform to your catalogue, margins and team.

Which is cheaper in India, Shopify or WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is cheaper in cash for most stores, and the gap grows with online sales, because it has no plan fee and no transaction fee. Shopify is cheaper in effort.

Does Shopify support UPI and cash on delivery in India?

Yes. UPI works through Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or PhonePe. Cash on delivery is enabled as a manual payment method, and apps add OTP verification and COD fees.

Can Shopify generate GST invoices?

Yes, with an app. The built-in order confirmation does not include HSN codes or the CGST, SGST and IGST split. Most Indian GST invoice apps charge a monthly subscription.

Is WooCommerce good for SEO?

Yes, often better than Shopify for content-led strategies, because you control URLs, schema, redirects and the blog completely. The condition is good hosting and a clean build; a slow WooCommerce site loses that advantage.

Can I move from Shopify to WooCommerce later?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be exported and imported, and a redirect map preserves rankings. Plan it as a project rather than a weekend task.
