Hiring an SEO agency in India: an honest guide for UK, US, UAE, Australian and Indian businesses
What you save, what you give up and how to protect yourself when hiring an SEO agency in India: real cost data, time-zone overlap by country, contract terms and the red flags that matter.

Hiring an SEO agency in India makes sense when you want experienced technical and content work at a lower monthly cost, and you can manage a team by written briefs and a few scheduled calls. It works less well when you need someone in the room, deep local market knowledge from day one, or same-hour replies across a large time difference.
We should be upfront: Zuptek is an SEO agency headquartered in India, so we have an interest in this question. This guide tries to answer it the way we would for a friend. It covers what Indian agencies typically charge compared with agencies in the US and elsewhere, how the working day overlaps with the UK, the US, the UAE and Australia, what to put in the contract, the red flags that should end a conversation, and the questions to ask before you sign. Indian businesses choosing between agencies at home will find most of it applies to them too. If you want to see how we structure our own work, our SEO services page lists our plans and published prices.
Key takeaways
- Indian SEO agencies generally charge less. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, 76% of India-based SEOs charged $1,000 or less per month, while 79.1% of US and Canadian providers charged more than that.
- Lower fees only save money if the work is good. Budget your own time for briefing, review and local fact-checking.
- Time zones decide how you work. The UAE overlaps almost a full day with India, the UK overlaps for the Indian afternoon, Australia for the Indian morning, and the US mostly works asynchronously.
- Own every account: Search Console, Analytics, Google Business Profile, your CMS and any content or links built for you.
- Walk away from guaranteed rankings, secret methods and bulk link packages. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Ask for results in your own market. An agency that ranks Indian sites well may still need to show you it understands UK, US, Gulf or Australian buyers.
Should you hire an SEO agency based in India?
There is no single right answer. It depends on what kind of SEO you need and how your team likes to work.
It tends to work well when:
- Your SEO needs are mainly technical audits, site fixes, content production, on-page optimisation and reporting, which can be done remotely to a clear brief.
- You have someone in-house who can approve content, answer product questions and give access quickly.
- Your budget would buy a part-time junior locally, but could buy a team in India.
- You sell to India as well as abroad, and want one agency that understands both.
- You are comfortable with written communication, shared documents and scheduled video calls.
It tends to work less well when:
- You need in-person workshops, on-site visits or a consultant in your sales meetings.
- Your industry depends on local regulation and nuance that changes often, and nobody on your side will review content.
- Your business needs same-hour responses during your working day and you are in a time zone with little overlap.
- You want link building through local relationships, such as trade press and business associations in your city, and the agency has no contacts there.
A common split: the Indian agency handles technical SEO, content and reporting, while someone local handles PR, partnerships and final edits.
How much does an SEO agency in India cost compared with local agencies?
The clearest public data comes from Ahrefs, which polled 439 SEO service providers about pricing. Across all respondents, the average monthly retainer was $2,917 and the average hourly rate was $111. India was the clear outlier on price:
| Market (Ahrefs survey) | Monthly retainer pattern | Hourly rate pattern |
|---|---|---|
| India | 76% charge $1,000 or less per month | 85.7% charge $30 an hour or less |
| US and Canada | 79.1% charge $1,001 or more per month | 66.7% charge $75 to $200 an hour |
| All respondents | Average $2,917 per month | Average $111 an hour |
The survey does not give separate figures for the UK, the UAE or Australia, so treat any precise comparison for those markets with care.
For Indian businesses, our guide to SEO cost in India breaks prices down by business type in rupees. As a reference point, Zuptek’s published Business SEO plans are Rs 9,999, Rs 19,999 and Rs 34,999 per month, and our Local SEO plans are Rs 6,999, Rs 12,999 and Rs 22,999 per month, plus GST where it applies.
The costs that do not appear on the quote
Budget for these as well as the fee:
- Your review time. Someone on your side must check content for accuracy, product detail and local tone. Plan two to four hours a month at the start.
- Local expertise. Regulated sectors such as healthcare, finance and legal services need a qualified reviewer. That is true with any agency, anywhere.
- Development time. SEO fixes often need a developer. Check whether the agency implements fixes or only recommends them.
- Tools and content extras. Ask whether paid tools, stock images, translation and link placements are included or billed separately.
How do time zones affect working with an Indian agency?
India Standard Time (IST) is five and a half hours ahead of UTC and does not change for daylight saving. Your overlap therefore shifts twice a year if your country changes its clocks. The table assumes an Indian office day of roughly 9:30 to 18:30 IST.
| Your market | Time difference | Overlap with an Indian office day | Working pattern that suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | India is 1.5 hours ahead | Almost the whole working day | Real-time collaboration, calls on short notice |
| UK | India is 5.5 hours ahead in winter (GMT), 4.5 hours in summer (BST) | UK morning to early afternoon, which is the Indian afternoon | Calls in the UK morning; work done by the start of your next day |
| Australia (Sydney, Melbourne) | Australia is 4.5 hours ahead in winter, 5.5 hours in summer | Australian afternoon, which is the Indian morning | Calls after lunch in Australia; Perth overlaps more |
| US East Coast | India is 10.5 hours ahead in winter, 9.5 hours in summer | Very little in standard hours | Asynchronous: written briefs, recorded walkthroughs, an early-morning US call that is an evening call in India |
| US West Coast | India is 13.5 hours ahead in winter, 12.5 hours in summer | Almost none | Fully asynchronous, with a fixed weekly call |
A large time difference can help: a US client who sends feedback in the evening often wakes up to the changes. It hurts only when something is urgent, such as a site going down, so agree in writing how emergencies are handled.
Ask any agency, including us, for the exact hours a named person is available for your market. “24/7 support” on a website is not the same thing.
Contracts, payment and tax: what to agree before you start
A good contract protects both sides and makes the relationship easier. Check these points whatever country you are in.
- Scope and deliverables. Number of pages optimised, articles published, links built, technical fixes implemented and reports sent per month. “SEO services” on its own is not a scope.
- Account ownership. Search Console, Google Analytics, Google Business Profile, your domain, hosting and CMS stay in your name. The agency gets user access, never ownership.
- Content and link ownership. Content written for you is yours once paid for. Links should point to your site from sites the agency does not control or quietly rent.
- Minimum term and notice. A three to six-month initial term with 30 days’ notice after that is common and fair, given how long SEO takes. Our guide on how long SEO takes to show results explains why. Twelve-month lock-ins with no exit are a warning sign.
- Currency and payment method. Agree the currency of invoice, who pays bank or transfer fees, and the payment schedule.
- Tax. Indian clients pay 18% GST on agency fees. For overseas clients, a registered Indian agency can generally treat the work as an export of services and invoice without GST after filing a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) for the financial year. Your own country’s tax rules on importing services still apply, so check with your accountant.
- Governing law and disputes. State which country’s law applies and how disputes are resolved. Take local legal advice for large contracts.
- Data protection. If the agency will see personal data, such as leads in your CRM or customer emails, you are sharing data across borders. UK businesses should read the ICO’s guidance on international transfers and put the right contract terms in place. Businesses elsewhere should check their own privacy law. Most SEO work does not need personal data at all, so the simplest protection is not to share it.
- Subcontracting. Ask whether the agency outsources any work, such as content or links, to third parties, and require disclosure.
- Confidentiality. Especially if you share revenue data or product plans.
Red flags when hiring an SEO agency in India (or anywhere)
Most bad practice blamed on “cheap offshore SEO” is about shortcuts, not geography. Google’s own advice on whether you need an SEO covers several of these warnings directly.
- Guaranteed rankings. Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and warns against SEOs who claim a “special relationship” with Google.
- Cold emails from strangers. Google tells site owners to be wary of SEO firms that email out of the blue. Many offshore SEO pitches start this way.
- Secret methods. If an agency will not explain what it changes on your site, or will not share its link sources, do not hire it.
- Bulk link packages. “300 backlinks a month” usually means paid links, link exchanges or automated link creation, all of which Google lists as link spam in its spam policies.
- Mass-produced content. Hundreds of thin pages generated to target keyword variations count as scaled content abuse under the same policies.
- Reports that show only rankings. Rankings for terms nobody searches are easy to show. You need clicks, enquiries and revenue from organic search.
- No named people. You should know who your strategist is and who writes your content.
- They ask to own your accounts. Any agency that sets up Search Console or Analytics in its own name is keeping your data.
Questions to ask before you sign
Use these in your first call. The answers tell you more than any portfolio.
| Question | A good answer sounds like | A worrying answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Can you show results for a business in my country? | A case study or reference with Search Console data from that market | “SEO is the same everywhere” |
| What will you do in the first 90 days? | A specific plan: audit, fixes, content, link targets, by month | “We will start optimising” |
| Who will work on my account? | Named strategist, writer and developer | “Our team” with no names |
| How do you build links? | Outreach, digital PR, partnerships and listings they can show you | Packages with a fixed number of links |
| What will you need from us? | Access, a contact for approvals, product input | Nothing at all |
| How and when do you report? | Monthly report built on Search Console and Analytics data, with a call | Ranking screenshots only |
| What hours can I reach you in my time zone? | Exact hours and an emergency process | “24/7” |
| What happens if we stop? | You keep all accounts, content and links; handover notes | Links removed, content withheld |
| Do you subcontract any work? | Clear yes or no, with details | Evasion |
Google also suggests asking any SEO for examples of previous work and what results they expect in what timeframe. Check whether the answer is specific to your site.
How to run the first 90 days with an offshore SEO agency
A clear start avoids most of the problems people associate with remote agencies.
- Week 1: access. Give user access to Search Console, Analytics and your CMS. For an audit only, Google recommends granting read access to Search Console, not full control.
- Week 1 to 2: kickoff. One long call to cover products, buyers, competitors, markets and approvals. Record it so new team members can watch it later.
- Week 2 to 4: audit and plan. A written audit with prioritised fixes, a keyword map per market and a content plan.
- Month 2 to 3: fixes and first content. Technical fixes implemented, priority pages rewritten, first articles published.
- Every month: report and call. Organic clicks, enquiries or revenue, work completed, next month’s plan.
Keep one shared document for briefs, one channel for quick questions and a fixed call that suits both time zones.
A note for businesses in India choosing an agency at home
The same rules apply, with two differences. An agency in another Indian city can serve you well if it reports clearly and visits when needed. And if your customers search in Hindi or another Indian language, check that the agency can research and write in it, not only translate. Ask for a tax invoice with GST shown so you can claim input credit if registered.
Proof matters more than location
The useful question is not “Is this agency in India?” but “Has this agency done this work, for a business like mine, in my market?” For example, our work for a UK private medical specialist produced 140% more private consultations and 48+ top-three UK rankings over 12 months, built on UK clinical directories, UK author credentials and UK local search. That is the kind of evidence to ask any agency for, wherever it is based. For businesses entering new countries, our international SEO service explains how we plan market by market.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to outsource SEO to India?
It is as safe as the agency you choose and the contract you sign. Keep every account in your own name, give the minimum access needed, agree deliverables and ownership of content and links in writing, and avoid anyone promising guaranteed rankings or bulk links. With those protections, the risks are the same as hiring any remote agency, in India or elsewhere.
How much cheaper are Indian SEO agencies?
Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers found 76% of India-based SEOs charge $1,000 or less a month, while 79.1% of US and Canadian providers charge more than $1,000. The average across all respondents was $2,917 a month. The real saving depends on quality: a cheaper agency that needs heavy correction can cost more in your time.
Will an Indian agency understand my local market?
Only if it has worked in that market or researches it properly. Ask for case studies or references from your country, look at sample content written for your audience, and check spelling, terminology and examples. For regulated sectors, plan for a qualified person on your side to review content before it goes live, whichever agency you use.
Do overseas clients pay GST to an Indian SEO agency?
Generally no. A GST-registered Indian agency can usually treat services for a client abroad as an export of services and invoice without GST once it has filed a Letter of Undertaking for the financial year, provided the conditions for export are met. Your own country’s rules on imported services still apply, so confirm the position with your accountant.
What time zone overlap can I expect with an Indian SEO agency?
The UAE overlaps almost a full working day with India. UK businesses usually get the UK morning and early afternoon. Australian businesses get their afternoon, which is the Indian morning. US businesses have little standard-hours overlap and work best asynchronously with one fixed weekly call. Ask the agency for exact hours in writing.
What contract terms should I insist on with an offshore SEO agency?
Insist on a written scope with monthly deliverables, account ownership in your name, ownership of content and links, a reasonable minimum term with a clear notice period, invoice currency and payment terms, governing law, confidentiality, data protection terms if personal data is shared, and disclosure of any subcontracting. Take legal advice for large contracts.
